WHAT IS THE EXPLORE AWARD?
Developing your skills to become an independent paddler.
British Canoeing have designed several awards to help you become confident on the water and eventually be able to paddle confidently and safely on your own.
If you want to become independent on the water, go on self-guided adventures and know how to control your craft and stay safe on the water, this is the award for you. In this award you will take ownership of your own decisions and learn to make confidence choices, based on the places you paddle, wind and weather.
We have two options for this award:
1. One day course for Adults
2. Three Week course for children
LEARN NEW SKILLS & BUILD CONFIDENCE
Our passionate coaches are here to get you or your child to build SUP Skills and continue your British Canoeing SUP PATHWAY.

What You'll Learn
- On the water – etiquette and how to share the space with other water users
- Different environments you can paddle – (lakes, rivers, canals, estuaries)
- Controlling your SUP safely
- Clothing and equipment – needs for different environments and weather
- Safe exploration
After this course you should feel confident to understand your kit and the environment you choose to paddle in, have basic safety and rescue skills and feel confident paddling with no assistance from a coach.
1 DAY COURSE
3 WEEK kids COURSE
The course will be run over 3 weeks on a Thursday Morning in the summer holidays
Course 1: 28th July – 11th August
Course 2: 18th August – 1st September
2pm – 5pm

- Swimsuit and loose clothing to paddle in
Change of clothes
Water shoes / trainers you don’t mind getting wet – these must cover the toes and attach to the foot – not flip-flops.
COURSE PROGRESSION
1. DISCOVER AWARD
Taking you on the next steps towards becoming an independent paddler, for a fun and safe time on the water. Developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; developing your decision making and practical skills, giving you confidence on the water.
2. EXPLORE AWARD
Your Explore Award gives you ownership; allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddlesport. Working with a coach you will be able to develop a programme that suits what you need. Learning to make confident choices with this individualised approach. Recognising your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment.
3. sHELTERED FLAT WATER
Awards allow you to develop your personal paddling and decision making skills in the craft and environment of your choice. For us this will be SUP
The award is based on your learning, encouraging you in your personal development of SUP in a sheltered flat water environment.
